Proxies And VPN

What is a VPN?
A VPN (virtual private network) is an alternative to a truly private network, where someone completely owns the infrastructure (i.e., wires) between locations and no one else can use it. Typically a VPN is used when some part of the network path crosses a public network such as the Internet or, in the case of wireless, “airspace.” A VPN may also be used to provide additional security on private networks. The VPN builds an encrypted “tunnel” through a public/private network which provides the necessary confidentiality (this prevents snooping), sender authentication (this prevents identity spoofing), and data integrity for secure access to private resources.

A VPN client allows you to “tunnel” all of your traffic to UCSB over an encrypted, authenticated link which terminates on campus at our VPN server. The VPN server decrypts your traffic and forwards it to whatever its original destination was, but it changes the source address of your traffic from your ISP-assigned address to a UCSB-assigned address. This way, all of your traffic appears to be coming from on campus and may not be limited by internal Internet firewall rules.

What is a proxy?
Proxy sites enable you to bypass your own Internet provider and browse through the proxy web site. All that you have to do is type the web site address you would like to visit in the form they provide, and start browsing. Once you keep browsing using that form, you are protected and your real IP address is not being logged.

VPN downloads!

1) Loki VPN Client 1.2.0.9 CURRENTLY NOT WORKING
Loki Network allows you to surf the Internet anonymously and hides your real location (IP address). Everything you do through the Loki Network is done from the name of the Loki Network server and from its IP address. Connection between your computer and Loki Network is secured with SSL.
This is my personal favorite.

2) Hotspot Shield 1.15
Hotspot Shield is a freeware which ensures anonymous and censor-free internet usage. With Hotspot Shield you can even access blocked websites. For example: Skype is blocked in certain parts of the world. With Hotspot Shield, anyone can access Skype (and any other site they choose). The free software ensures censor-free internet usage by encrypting all communications to and from your computer to protect you from online spying. While advertising supported, HotSpot Shield is is not an invasive adware or pervasive spyware application.
